Concrete Driveways: Poured and Stamped
A concrete driveway is cast in place as one slab on a compacted base, with control joints cut so that shrinkage cracks form along straight lines. Stamped concrete is pressed with a mould while it is still soft, to look like brick, cobble or stone, and coloured with a surface hardener. A concrete driveway has no sand joints for weeds. A crack runs through the slab and is repaired by saw-cutting and recasting the panel.
Paving the Driveway Crossing: Tshwane Wayleave Rules
A driveway that continues across the sidewalk to the kerb crosses the public road reserve. Three rules apply to that part:
- It needs a wayleave. The City of Tshwane Work in the Public Road Reserve By-laws (Provincial Gazette 048, 11 February 2026), section 3(2)(i), list "the installation or construction of kerbing, paving, bollards, walls, gardens, etc on sidewalks by property owners or occupiers". Section 4(1) states that all work in the public road reserve is controlled by an approved wayleave.
- An engineer applies. Section 2(1) requires the application to be submitted by a professional engineer registered on the City's Wayleave Management System.
- There is a processing fee. The City's 2026/27 tariff, Schedule 26, lists R2,800 including VAT to process a wayleave application for normal civil engineering projects.
The quote marks where the stand ends and the sidewalk begins, so the sidewalk part is priced and approved on its own.
Driveway Ideas for Pretoria Homes
- Border bands. A charcoal soldier course around a lighter infill frames the driveway, for R15 to R25 per m² over plain herringbone in a Pretoria design guide (April 2026).
- Match the house. Clay pavers sit well with Highveld face-brick, and grey or charcoal blocks with plastered Tuscan and modern homes.
- Herringbone where cars turn. Patterns are compared under paving designs.
- Grass strips. Two paved wheel tracks with grass between them cut the paved area on a long driveway.
- Tar run with a paved apron. A tar drive with a block apron at the garage combines the two surfaces.
Re-Laying a Sunken Driveway
A paved driveway that has dipped in the wheel tracks, lifted over a tree root or sunk over an old trench keeps its pavers. The affected area is lifted, the blocks stacked, the sub-base dug out and rebuilt in compacted layers, and the same blocks re-laid and re-sanded. Guide A (November 2025) lists standard installation labour in Gauteng at R100 to R200 per m². A burst pipe under paving is reached the same way, which is simpler with blocks than with a cast slab.
Driveway Falls and Stormwater
A paved drive is laid with a fall away from the garage and house, towards the street or a channel drain at the gate line, so water does not pool at the garage door or against a boundary wall. On dolomite stands this matters more: the City of Tshwane's 2025 council report names concentrated water ingress as the main cause of sinkholes, explained under paving in Centurion.
Paving Wiz Pretoria: Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a paved driveway cost in Pretoria?
R9,000 to R12,600 for a 36 m² double driveway in concrete blocks at R250 to R350 per m² installed, in a February 2026 Johannesburg and Pretoria guide. Guide C (February 2026) lists clay pavers including installation at R300 to R350 per m², giving R10,800 to R12,600 for 36 m²; tar guide F (January 2026) lists Pretoria residential tar at R90 to R160 per m², giving R3,240 to R5,760.
Do I need City approval to pave my driveway crossing?
Yes, for the part on the sidewalk. The City of Tshwane's Work in the Public Road Reserve By-laws list paving on sidewalks by property owners as work that needs service-agency conditions before a wayleave is granted. Processing costs R2,800 including VAT in 2026/27.
Is a concrete driveway better than paving?
A poured concrete driveway gives one continuous slab and can be stamped with a pattern; stamped concrete runs R400 to R600 per m² in a November 2025 Pretoria guide. Block paving can be lifted and re-laid in patches after a burst pipe or root damage.
What is the best paving for a steep driveway?
Interlocking blocks with firm edge restraints, or a smooth tar surface. Where the run-off goes at the bottom of the slope is planned at the site visit.
Which pattern suits a driveway?
Herringbone at 45° or 90°, where cars turn. Patterns and their premiums per m² are compared on the paving designs page.
