The spread for concrete block runs from R250 per m² (guides A, C and D) to R600 per m² (guide A, concrete pavers). Scope explains most of it: guide C states that installation is included, while guide A's material table does not say. Guide C's installed rows for concrete, clay, large slabs and cast-stone cobbles repeat, figure for figure, a national paving manufacturer's table built from February 2020 Gauteng market research.

Paving Calculator: m², Waste and Cost

  1. Measure the area. A rectangle is length × width. A triangle is ½ × base × height. A circle is 3.14 × radius × radius. An L-shaped driveway is two rectangles added together.
  2. Add for cuts. Order 5 to 10% more pavers than the measured area (guide B).
  3. Multiply by the rate. Area in m² × the rate per m² in one guide's scope.

Worked example: a driveway 8 m long and 5 m wide is 40 m². The pavers to order are 42 to 44 m². At guide C's installed rate of R250 to R350 per m², the driveway costs R10,000 to R14,000. At guide A's standard Gauteng labour rate of R100 to R200 per m² (November 2025), 40 m² costs R4,000 to R8,000.

Cost Drivers for Paving in Pretoria

Sidewalk Paving and the City of Tshwane Wayleave Fee

The City of Tshwane Work in the Public Road Reserve By-laws (Provincial Gazette 048, 11 February 2026) list paving on sidewalks by property owners in section 3(2)(i). Section 2(1) requires the wayleave application to be submitted by a professional engineer. The City's 2026/27 tariff, Schedule 26, charges R2,800 including VAT to process a wayleave application for normal civil engineering projects, from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. That processing fee sits outside the paving rate per m².

Why Cheap Paving Quotes Go Wrong

A low quote usually drops the base. Site preparation is 30 to 40% of the total in guide A, so a quote without a sub-base line looks that much cheaper. The City of Tshwane measures compaction on its own work: cross-cut trenches are compacted to at least 90% MOD AASHTO under section 2(4) of the Work in the Public Road Reserve By-laws. A quote should name the sub-base material and how it is compacted.

Paving at Cashbuild vs Installed Paving

A retailer's paver price covers the pavers only. Paving Wiz Pretoria does not quote retailer shelf prices, so check the branch. In guide C, 50 mm grey bevel pavers cost R150 to R162 per m² and the installed rate is R250 to R350 per m². Guide A lists standard Gauteng installation labour at R100 to R200 per m².

Paving Wiz Pretoria: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to pave 40 m²?

R10,000 to R14,000 for 40 m² of concrete bevel or interlocking blocks at R250 to R350 per m² installed (guide C, February 2026). Guide A's Pretoria rate of R250 to R410 per m² gives R10,000 to R16,400. Labour alone for 40 m² costs R4,000 to R8,000.

How much is paving at Cashbuild?

Retail paver prices cover the pavers only, so check the branch for the current shelf price. Guide C (February 2026) lists 50 mm grey bevel pavers at R150 to R162 per m² against R250 to R350 per m² installed. Installation adds labour of R100 to R200 per m², sand, edging and sub-base.

How much per m² does it cost to lay paving?

R100 to R200 per m² for labour on a standard job, in three Pretoria-area guides dated November 2025 to February 2026. Complex patterns run R250 to R300 per m² in guide A.

What is the cheapest paving per m²?

Grey 50 mm concrete bevel pavers: R150 to R162 per m² for the pavers and R250 to R350 per m² installed, in guide C (February 2026). Clay, cobble and natural stone start higher in every guide on this page.

How much does a sub-base add to paving?

R6,500 to R10,000 for a gravel sub-base on 50 m², in guides A, C and D. A cast concrete base for 50 m² costs R10,000 to R18,800 in guides A and C. Guide A puts site preparation at 30 to 40% of the total project cost.

R15 to R25 per m² for a herringbone with a soldier-course border, over plain herringbone, in guide E (April 2026). A mixed pattern with a feature strip adds R30 to R50 per m², and full cobblestone or tumbled pavers add R60 to R120 per m².

Is tar cheaper than paving?

Yes, per m². Tar guide F (January 2026) puts Pretoria tar at R90 to R160 per m², against R250 to R350 per m² for installed concrete blocks in guide C. Paving can be lifted and re-laid in patches; tar is cut out and patched.

How many extra pavers should I order for cuts?

5 to 10% more than the measured area, per guide B (January 2026). A 36 m² driveway needs 37.8 to 39.6 m² of pavers.

Is there a municipal fee for paving the sidewalk?

Yes. The City of Tshwane charges R2,800 including VAT to process a wayleave application for normal civil engineering projects in 2026/27, and its by-law lists sidewalk paving by owners as wayleave work.

Does a paving price include rubble removal?

No, not by default. Removing an old surface and carting the rubble is a separate line on most quotes, so check that the quote names it.
